This is a gorgeous set edition that includes a 272-page manual.
Based on Rider Waite Tarot, but arranged with the supervision of the author.
Probably this is also the first Tarot Primer published in Japan.

This "DEATH" looks like the image of the original Rider Waite version is flipped horizontally. That point may be the supervisor's intention, but I don't understand it, so I ignore it here, sorry.

In this picture, a man who was a king died and his funeral is held only by a priest, his wife, and his child. Because it is done in the wilderness outside the city, it appears that the man was not loved by the populace as a king. Also, it seems that the administration has already been robbed by someone else, because there are persons outside the city who were supposed to be in charge of political affairs after the death of the king, and because the crown is rolling on the ground unnecessarily. Considering these, the wife's turning away may be a sign that she doesn't want to accept her husband's death as a result of anticipating their treatment in the future.

Regardless of that, the funeral of the man who was the king proceeded, and the god of death came to pick him up. The horse of the god of death is standing astride only the body of the king may be an indication that he is the only one who is leaving this world and will enter the world of death.

The god of death has a flag with a symbol of the magic society. The included manual says, that the god of death comes to pick up him with this flag in the form of skeleton without armor means that a man who was a king throws away his body and starts the spiritual journey with magical significance. But I don't understand how "magical significance" is. Therefore this looks a picture of "a man's death who defeated in politics or war and had fallen from the throne" to me. I feel that the god of death and his horse is an implication of someone or something that deprived the throne from a man, and because of their size, I think that a man's beleaved family won't be able to get back the throne. In addition, because of the scenery of a dawn of the city where they were exiled from, I feel that politics under a new power system is starting and welcomed by citizens.

If we die, whatever our position in life, we lose the meaning of our economic and political power for ourselves. How shall we reserve them for our beleaved family, or shall we be making anything that remains after our death... we may need to live with thought about those. And, for beleaved someones, it may mean that they need not only sticking to what they lost but also switching feeling and looking at new things.

From this picture, I felt and thought this way.

おそらく、日本で最初に出版されたタロット入門書です。

13番：DEATH

元となったライダー・ウエイト版の「DEATH」を、左右反転させたような絵柄です。その点にも監修者の意図があるのでしょうが、私には理解しきれないので、ここでは無視します。

この絵は、王だった男が死に、その葬儀を司祭と妻と子供だけで行っている場面です。街の外の荒野で行われていることから、男は王として民衆に愛されていなかったように見えます。また、王の死後に政務を担う可能性があった人物たちが街の外にいること、王冠が無造作に転がっていることからも、既に政権は別の誰かに奪われた後のようです。これを踏まえて見ると、妻が顔を背けているのは、今後の自分たちの身の振り方を予想し、夫の死を受け入れたくないという気持ちの現れなのかもしれません。

そんなことには構わず、王だった男の葬儀は進行し、死神が迎えに来ました。死神の騎馬が王の遺体だけを跨いでいるのは、彼だけが現世を離れて死の世界へ行くという暗示でしょう。

死神の手には、魔術結社の紋章の旗があります。同梱の解説書によると、この紋章を持ち、甲冑を着ていない骸骨の姿で死神が迎えに来たことは、王だった男が肉体を捨て、魔術的な意義のある魂の旅に出ることを示すそうです。しかし、私には「魔術的な意義」というものが理解できません。そのため、この絵は「政治か戦争で失敗し、王の座から失墜した男の死」を描いたものに見えます。そして、死神とその騎馬は王の権威を奪った何かの暗示に感じられ、それらの大きさから、遺族が権力を取り戻すことは困難なのだろうと考えます。また、彼らが追放された後の街には、朝日が昇り始めている様子から、新しい体制での政治が始まり、しかも民衆から歓迎されていると察しられます。

生前はどんな立場にあろうと、死んでしまったら財力も権力も無意味です。それらを遺族へどう残すか、死後にも残るものを築けたか…これらを意識して生きる必要がありそうです。また、残された側にとっては、失ったものに固執するだけでなく、気持ちを切り替えて新しい物事へと目を向けねばならない時なのでしょう。

この絵から、私はこうしたことを感じ、考えました。
