Pair of small Komainu statues with a face mask

I wrote an article about Komainu statues made of pottery in Hachioji Shrine in Sue-cho, Mizunami City in the summer 2020.
This is one of photos I took for that article, captured a pair of small Komainu statues sitting side by side at the feet of very large Komainu statues.
They were too lovely, so I couldn't help to shoot them.
Because square bricks around them were general fired bricks, by comparing, you will be able to see how small they are.
Such they were wearing face masks, which were also small.
Face masks were made, maybe by somebody local, with pieces of towel and plastic cable ties.
That small Komainu statues were wearing face masks may have somebody's wish that COVID-19 will end soon, or somebody's kindness to prevent also Komainu statues from getting COVID-19, or both.
Including the consideration of people, I felt they were anyway adorable ... !
So, this photo is my favorite.

マスクをつけた小さな狛犬たち

2020年夏、瑞浪市陶町にある八王子神社の陶製狛犬像について記事を書きました。
その記事に掲載する画像として撮った写真の中の１枚で、とても大きな狛犬像の足元にちょこんと並んで座っている小さな狛犬たちの写真です。
あまりにも可愛くて、撮影せずにはいられませんでした。
狛犬たちの横に写る四角いレンガは一般的な焼成レンガですから、比較すれば彼らがいかに小さいかが判るでしょう。
そんな彼らが、これまた小さなマスクをしていたのです。
おそらく地元の人の手作りなのでしょう、マスクの素材は、タオルの端切と結束バンドでした。
新型コロナウィルス感染症の早期終息の祈願も込められているのかもしれませんし、狛犬たちが感染しないようにという誰かの優しさかもしれません。
そうした人々の心遣いも含めて、とにかく愛らしかったのです…！
私のお気に入りの１枚です。
