This deck is bound in an introductory book on tarot fortune-telling for girls, almost of its cards were drawn by a Shojo manga artist who was popular at the time of its release. Although a word "angelic" is included in this book's name, its deck doesn't have an angel as a main motif, but its cards, which were arranged with based on Golden Dawn Edition or Rider Waite Edition, have a modern and clean impression with Shojo-manga-style figure paintings and coloring with watercolor. As a side note, angels are drawn on the other 8 dedicated cards by an another creator, and the love fortune-telling and little magics using those cards are introduced in its book.

That's all for my comment about the book and the deck, and now I'll write about the "Death" card.

A skeleton wearing a dark color robe is drawn against the unevenlessly red background. Due to have a scythe in its hand, we can see at the first glance that it's the death god. What is different from other deck's "Death" picture with the same pattern will be that it looks like smiling a little cute. If we didn't know this deck is an appendix bound in a love fortune-telling introductory book for girls, its smile can look to us as if it was pleased with taking lives, and we will feel it's creepy rather.

Nonetheless, the reason why it was drawn to make it look like smiling is probably because this deck is an appendix of the book whose main buyers are supposed to be teenage girls. And, the reason why the death god is looking sideways instead of here, the reason why it has a scythe in its hand, are also for the same reason probably, I think.

Through enjoying to watch "Death" cards of various decks, I'm perceiving that there seem to be some pattern in those pictures of "Death" card. For example, the main ones are "a picture depicting of someone's funeral", "a picture depicting of a skeleton with clothes or armors", and "a picture depicting of a skeleton with a scythe in its hand as a death god". For each of these patterns, the impression that each picture gives to the viewer also seems to be patterned, I think. For example, "a picture depicting of someone's funeral" tends to give the impression of "sadness and pain of losing loved ones or things".

The card introduced on this article has just "a picture depicted of a skeleton with a scythe in its hand as a death god". Pictures with this pattern tends to give us fear and anxiety that "something scary trying to kill us may be coming". And, they make us think "what should we do to keep this something scary away?". At then, with the situation and feelings that "neither we ourselves nor our anything important has yet been hit by a crisis", we often watch those pictures and have an impression. In addition, because for this card the death god hasn't yet look at us, even more so, we will be easy to have potentially an consciousness that "I'm worried about the future, but I'm still okay now".

The mentality and association like this should be perhaps easy to be accepted to also girls who are young and dreaming their brightly futures. At least, rather than thinking of bereavement of someone important or their own death. That's why I thought as above.

That said, I feel the picture of the smiling death god having a scythe in its hand is still creepy. I'm worried because I don't know what the death god is thinking or why it's smiling, and I'm scared if the death god is so happy to put an end to lives and things. It's a good introductory book of tarot to properly scare the viewer by the "Death" card, I think.

死神 DEATH

　このデッキは少女向けタロット入門書に綴じ込まれたもので、発売当時人気のあった少女漫画家によって作画されました。書籍名に天使という言葉がありますが天使がモチーフになっているのではなく、ゴールデンドーン版やライダー・ウエイト版をベースとして、少女漫画風に描かれた人物と水彩を使った色使いとで現代的ですっきりとした印象にアレンジされています。ちなみに、天使は専用のカード８枚に他のイラストレータによって描かれており、それらを使った恋占いやちょっとしたおまじないなどが、本誌にて紹介されています。
　デッキと書籍の紹介はここまでとして、いよいよ「死神」のカードを見ていきます。
　斑らな赤色を背景に、暗い色のローブを着た骸骨が描かれています。その手には大鎌もあり、一見して死神が描かれていると判ります。同じパターンの絵と違っているのは、死神がちょっと可愛らしく笑っているように見えるところでしょうか。これが少女向けの恋愛占い用入門書の付属デッキのカードだと知らずに見れば、この死神の笑顔はまるで命を奪うことを喜んでいるかのように見えて、むしろ無気味に感じられることでしょう。
　それなのにわざわざ笑顔に見えるような描き方がされているのは、もちろんローティーンの少女たちが主な購買層と想定されている書籍だからでしょう。そして、死神がこちらを見ずに横を向いていることも、大鎌を手にしているのも、同じ理由によると私は考えます。
　さまざまなデッキの「死（13番・死神）」のカードを見て感じていることなのですが、「死」のカードの絵柄にも何種類かのパターン（定型）があるようです。主なところで例を挙げれば、「誰かの葬儀の様子が描かれているもの」、「服や甲冑を着た骸骨が描かれているもの」、「大鎌を手にした骸骨が死神として描かれているもの」です。これらのパターンごとに見る者へ与える印象もパターン化していると思われます。例えば、「誰かの葬儀の様子が描かれているもの」ならば、「大切な人を失うような悲しさや辛さ」といった具合にです。
　今回ご紹介しているカードは、「大鎌を手にした骸骨が死神として描かれているもの」そのものです。このパターンの絵は、「命を奪おうとする恐ろしい何かが近づいてくるのかもしれない」という恐怖や不安を私たちに与えます。そして、「この恐ろしい何かを遠ざけるにはどうするべきか」を考えさせます。つまり、「私たち自身も私たちの大切な存在も絶望的な危機にまだ見舞われていない状況や心境」で絵を見、感想を抱くことが多いのです。加えて、このカードでは死神が私たちのほうを見ていないのですから、なおさらに「今後を考えると不安だけど今はまだ大丈夫」という意識を潜在的に持ちやすいことでしょう。
　このような心理や連想は、年若くて輝かしい将来を夢見る少女たちにも受け入れやすいはずです。少なくとも、大切な誰かとの死に別れや自分自身の死を思い浮かべることよりは。そのため、上述のように私は考えました。
　とは言え、死神が笑顔で大鎌を持っている絵というのは、やはり不気味な感じがします。死神が何を考えているのか、どうして笑っているのかが解らなくて不安になったり、命や物事にとどめを刺すのがそんなに嬉しいのだろうかと恐ろしくなったりします。さすがタロット入門書のデッキですね。
