• This is a set of a manual book, a deck of 22 Major Arcana, a brief manual card, and a spare card.

The characteristic of this book is that both pictures and commentaries are easy to accept and understand for even beginners due to have been created by a famous fortune-teller and a picture book creator in Japan. Although the design is arranged boldly on some cards, every cards are based on elements and meaning common to traditional or famous deck pictures, so even persons who experienced the tarot fortune-telling can use this deck convincedly.

The picture of "DEATH" card has been arranged boldly, too. What is drawn in the picture is the death god who puts the earth whose sea is dyed pink at his feet to attack it with lightning from the sky. The picture looks like one scene from a fairy tale or a comic or an anime due to picture book-like style and color usage. I had even a humorous impression on this picture at first.

But, after I noticed a color of the earth's sea, that the death god and his world are obviously bigger than that earth, floating clouds with an eye, and thunderclouds of the same color as him, I felt that they were creepy and that the feeling of being scared gradually arose in my heart.

On this picture, "death of someone human" is not drawn. Specific causes of death such as illness or war are not expressed, too. Instead, drawn are a strange earth and a scene reminiscent of its end.

If looking at this picture, we are able to understand "a picture of the scene of the end (crisis) of the earth (and us)", but because that scene is too unrealistic, we perhaps feel very vague about fear and impatience. For example, some feelings such as "I'm not sure (can't express specifically) but somehow (vaguely) I'm scared" remain gradually in the heart.

In the case of I, by this feeling, I remembered when I read or listened fairy tales and old tales that include cluel scenes such as "Little Red Riding Hood" or "Kachi-kachi Yama" in my childhood. That was the feeling mixed with the shock that the character was killed and relief that it was good to be a fictional stories.

I know that not everyone has the same impression as me, but it's sure that this deck contains so many elements that are familiar to "picture books of fairy tales or old tales". I think it's natural and reasonable that its target age is set to "10 to 100 years old" and that it's still sold at bookstores even almost 20 years after the first edition was released.

DEATH

　この書籍の特徴は、日本で著名な占い師と絵本作家によって制作され、タロット初心者にもとっつきやすい絵柄と解説が揃っていることです。カードによっては絵柄が大胆にアレンジされていますが、伝統的あるいは著名なデッキに共通する要素や意味をベースにしているので、タロット経験者にとっても納得して使用できます。
　「DEATH」の絵も大胆にアレンジされています。描かれているのは、海がピンク色に染まった地球を足元に置き、空から稲妻を落としている死神です。絵本のような作風と色使いとで、おとぎ話かアニメやマンガの１場面のように見えます。私はこの絵に対し、最初、ユーモラスな印象すら抱きました。
　しかし、地球の海の色といい、その地球に比べると明らかに巨大な死神とその世界空間、空に浮かぶ目のついた雲、死神と同じ色の雷雲といい、気づいてみるとじつに不気味で、じわじわと恐ろしさが心に広がりました。
　この絵には、「人間の誰かの死」は描かれていません。病気だとか戦争だとか、具体的な死因についても表現されていません。その代わり、違和感のある地球とその終焉を思わせる光景とが描かれています。
　この絵を見れば自然と「地球（と私たち自身）の終焉（危機）の絵」と理解できるのですが、現実離れしすぎている場面のために、恐怖や焦燥も非常に漠然と感じるのでしょう。たとえば、「よくわからない（具体的に表現できない）けどなんとなく（漠然と）怖い」という感覚がじんわりと心に残るといったように。
　私の場合、この感覚から子供の頃に「赤ずきんちゃん」や「かちかち山」といった残酷な場面が出てくる童話や昔話を聞いたり読んだりした時のことを思い出しました。登場人物が死んでしまうことにショックを受けつつ、架空の物語でよかったという安堵感が入り混じった心持ちをです。
　誰もが私と同じ感想を持つとは限りませんが、このデッキには「童話や昔話の絵本」に通ずる要素がたくさん盛り込まれていることは確かです。対象年齢が「10～100歳」とされていること、初版発売から20年近く経った今でも書店に並んでいることにも、納得です。
