This is an introductory book for tarot fortune-telling consisting of 22 sheets Major Arcana cards and a manual book. The reason why I bought it was that I liked pictures of its outer box at a glance. When opened, I knew those pictures of the outer box were a picture of "The Moon" and a picture of "The World" ("The Moon" is on the front cover side of the outer box, "The World" is on the back cover side). Of course, pictures of other cards are also wonderful, the scenes of the beautiful fantastic world are depicted with skillful composition and a realistic touch on all of them, and I remember being impressed at that time "what a beautiful tarot deck this is!". However, the order of this deck's cards has been changed to fit the supervisor's idea, it's different from the order of the Rider-Waite edition that is familiar to me, so I was confused not a little.

Such a deck's "Death" is the 14th card, named not "Shinigami" (meaning "death god" in Japanese) but "Shi" (meaning "the death" in Japanese). That's no exception, a picture in pursuit of beauty is depicted on it, with many mysterious objects. The explanation of the manual says, this picture shows "the land of death", and every object depicted in it is "the image that symbolizes death". For example, a pocket watch with an inside out dial symbolizes that the flow of the time is different from the world of the living, blue roses symbolize that the death god invites souls of the dead, the candle flames symbolize that the souls will reincarnate in the afterlife, the gate drawn in the background is an expression of the boundary between the land of death and the world of the living, and so on. In addition, the skillful point in this picture is that those objects are not just drawn simply, but in an overall tilted composition. Due to that, in looking at it, we tend to feel uncomfortable unknowingly and to have anxiety about the world depicted.

A man is depicted as the death god, but his appearance is not the skeleton, and nothing else is depicted that directly reminiscents of the death. Still, this picture gives anxiety and awe surely and can be said to act as "the Death" of the tarot. I was honestly surprised at that, and with that as a trigger, I strongly wanted to learn more notions of "death" of supervisors and creators reflected in pictures of "Death" card of various arrangement decks.

Death 死

　この書籍も大アルカナ22枚と解説書とで構成された、タロット占いの入門書です。私はこれを、外箱の絵に一目惚れして購入しました。開封して見れば、外箱に用いられていたのは「月」と「世界」の絵でした（外箱表紙側が「月」、裏表紙側が「世界」）。もちろん他のカードの絵も素晴らしく、巧みな構図と写実的なタッチとで描かれた美しい幻想世界に、「こんなに美しいタロットもあるのか！」と感動したことを覚えています。ただ、カードの順番は監修者の考えに沿ったものへ変更されており、馴染みのあるライダー・ウエイト版とは異なっている点には、少なからず戸惑いましたが。
　そんなデッキの「Death」は14番で、日本語名は「死神」ではなく「死」とされています。例に漏れず美しさを追求した絵柄で、神秘的な物がたくさん詰め込まれています。解説書の説明によると、この絵は「死の国」を表現しており、詰め込まれている要素はすべて「死を象徴するイメージ」とのことです。文字盤が裏返しの懐中時計は現実世界との時間の流れが異なることの象徴、青いバラは死神が死者の魂を招き寄せることを表現しており、ロウソクの炎は魂が来世へと転成することの象徴、背景の門は死の世界と現実世界との境界といった具合です。しかも、それらをただ描くのではなく、全体的に傾けた構図にしている点も巧みです。これにより見ていると無意識のうちに心落ち着かなくなり、描かれている世界に対して不安な気持ちを抱くのです。
　死神として男性も描かれていますが、その姿は骸骨ではありませんし、他には直接死に関連するものは何も描かれていません。それでいて、確かに不安や畏怖を覚える絵であり、タロットの「Death」としての機能を果たしていると言えます。そのことに私は素直に驚き、この絵をきっかけにして、さまざまなアレンジデッキの「Death」の絵に反映されている監修者や作画担当者の「死」に対する観念も知りたいと、強く思うようになったのです。
