Handmade pottery Komainu statue

There are the largest pottery Komainu statues in the world at Hachioji Shrine in Sue-cho, Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture.
("Komainu" is a statue of Guardian dog at the shrine in Japan, usually one set of two.)
They were made by efforts of the local people because Sue-cho is the town of pottery and porcelain.
At Hachioji Shrine, there are also many Komainu potter statues made by local people beside that largest ones.
The statue of this photo is one of them.
This statue conveys enthusiasm of the creator who kneaded the clay hard, made a shape, carved Komainu's face and coat, colored with glaze, and burned carefully.
This Komainu will be surely guarding the shrine eternally together with the largest statues in the world.

手作りの陶製狛犬

岐阜県瑞浪市陶町の八王子神社には、世界一大きな陶製の狛犬像があります。
（「狛犬」とは日本の神社を守る犬の像で、たいてい２体１組です）
陶町が陶器の街であることに因み、地元の人々の尽力によって造られたものです。
その大きな狛犬の他にも、八王子神社には、地元の人たちによって作られた陶製の狛犬像が多数あります。
この写真の像も、その１つです。
懸命に土を捏ね、形を作り、狛犬の顔や毛並みを刻み、釉薬で彩り、大切に焼成した、作り手の熱意が伝わってきます。
きっと世界一大きな狛犬像とともに、末長く神社を守っていくことでしょう。
