Hangesho

Hangesho (pronounced ha-n-ge-sho-u) is one of the seasonal words in Japan, it means the 11th day after the summer solstice, around July 2nd.
There is a grass whose leaves dye to white just around that day, because of that characteristic, the grass is also called Hangesho in Japanese (called "Chinese lizard's tail" in English).
The grass in this photo is Hangesho, and we can see the top leaf turns white.
It seems as if someone painted white but it naturally turns white.
The one with a hanging tip under the white leaf is the flower bud.
A few days after the shooting day, when a few more leaves turned white, the flower stalk and the flower buds grew up, and white flowers bloomed.

半夏生

半夏生とは日本において時節を表す言葉の１つで、７月２日頃に相当します。
ちょうどその頃に葉を白く染める草があり、その特徴からその草もハンゲショウと呼ばれます。
この写真の草がそのハンゲショウであり、一番上の葉が白くなっているのがわかります。
まるで誰かが塗ったかのようですがそうではなく、自然に変色していくのです。
その白い葉の下にある先端が垂れ下がっているのが、蕾です。
この日から数日経ち、もう数枚の葉が白く染まった頃、花茎が伸び、花芽も育って白い花が咲きました。
