Edible flower buds of the Japanese butterbur among the Ophiopogon japonicus leaves

My mother's garden is not a neat one with flower beds, it can look like a small vacant lot.
She originally used there as a kitchen garden, but as planting some trees near the boundaries of her land and planting some cute flowers between vegetables, she lost more and more parts of the field.
Therefore, now in her garden, asparagus grows next to lily, spring starflower and muscari spread all over her garden before we knew, strawberry and paeonia lactiflora fight for a position, and finally the human path is just like an animal trail.
This photo symbolizes the state of such my mother's garden.
It shows a state of the place where Japanese butterbur and Ophiopogon japonicus that used to grow respectively only in the corners of the garden expanded their roots and crosses the positions.
Both are growing very strong even though they aren't given any fertilizer.
I can't help but be impressed by the strength of these plants every time I step into my mother's garden.

フキノトウとリュウノヒゲ

母の庭は、花壇を作ってある整ったものではなく、小さな空き地のようなものです。
もともとは家庭菜園として使っていましたが、敷地の境界付近に木を植えたり、野菜の間に可愛い花を植えたりしているうちに、畑の部分がなくなっていきました。
そのため、現在もユリの隣にアスパラガスが生えていたり、ハナニラやムスカリがいつの間にか庭中に広がっていたり、イチゴとシャクヤクが陣地争いをしていたりしていて、人間用の通路は細い獣道のような有様です。
この写真は、そんな母の庭の状態を象徴する１枚です。
かつては庭の隅に少しだけ生えていたフキとリュウノヒゲがそれぞれ根を伸ばして勢力を拡大し、陣地が交わった辺りの様子です。
特に肥料を与えてはいませんが、どちらもとても逞しく成長しています。
私は母の庭に踏み込むたびに、こういう植物の強さに感じられずにはいられません。
